External
If one of history's Big Pendulums is the cultural swing between externally directed life versus internal introspection, we are clearly in an Age of the External. That is, science, technology, commerce, politics, and entertainment dominate our lives, particularly in the last two centuries of the Industrial Revolution. Plato's Cave and Lao-zi's mountain solitude have faded as metaphors and perspectives; those who assume the World Outside of Us exists and is primary hold sway.
Nevertheless, in looking outwards in space, time, energy, and the changes thereof, useful patterns and perspectives must be applied — to separate wheat from chaff, and of course, quality of life from mere standard of living.
